Medium Lava Rock
All great gas fire features begin with a proper and solid base. You can use fire glass or fire stones in your fireplace alone, but for deep-set fire pits, it's best to lay down a lava rock base. Not only is it more lightweight (10 pounds of lava rock will fill as much area as 20 pounds of fire glass), but is more cost-effective for your fire pit setup.
Lava rock can be utilized both indoors and outdoors, and can withstand high temperatures in any fire feature because of the natural process magma goes through when cooling. As the magma nears the surface and cools, the rock releases gas bubbles, which form the coarse, rough surface of the lava rock.
These lava rocks are from half an inch to 1 inch in width, and vary in color from brown to black - this is normal.
Whether lava rocks are your base media or you choose to use it by itself in your fire feature, it is durable and long-lasting.
All lava rocks from American Fireglass are sifted, sorted, and packed by hand. This way, they are top quality guaranteed, they can be used in a fire pit, and have no left-over gas pockets that could burst. For optimal results, we recommend pouring a minimum of two inches of lava rock over the fire pit burner, which allows the gas and flame to filter evenly through the lava rocks.
